Band Member Retires After 40 Years Service

The band celebrated the retirement of Jack Howden on Saturday the 5th September 2009 at the Festival Hall Market Rasen. Not just any celebration for a true bandsman who has served the band for 40 years, but a surprise "This is your life" for a very committed and colourful character. Players past and present gave up their time, some dashing across country from other engagements to pay tribute to Jack. Players from Barton Town Band, Kingsway Printers Band, Alford band, Horncastle Band, and the Market Rasen Band gave a memorable performance of pieces that Jack had played and enjoyed over his 40 years. Jacks long time friend and colleague Dennis Wheeler (who now lives in Wales) sent a dvd with his thoughts and best wishes which was displayed on the big screen. A major diplomatic incident was averted when his long time Musical Director made a surprise entrance, just stopping Jack in mid sentence "....yeh he was good, very good but he could be a bit of a.........." and just in time, Mr Keith Edwards was introduced in person to save the day, and proceed to conduct the band in Jacks favourite arrangements of Whitburn, The Young Amadeus, and Denzil Stephens arrangement of The Dambusters. Many reminiscences were shared, successes relived, and friendships rekindled. Jack was entertained truly professionally by the band, with a cornet Solo of Intermezzo by Mascagni so expertly delivered by our Principal Cornet player Smain Mokrane, accompanied shortly afterwards by his sister Aicha Mokrane and the excellent Bradley Hanson with the arrangement of 12th Street Rag. The humorous side of the evening was provided via potted history of Jacks Navy life and his introduction to brass banding. The evening was brought to a close in customary Eamon Andrews style, when a surprise to everybody, the bands ex-Principal Cornet player Martyn Brown made a surprise entrance, surprise indeed as Martyn lives in Spain and flew to the UK for the day especially for the occasion. A well deserved tribute to a conscientious and dedicated bandsman. The band President Nick Hall presented Jack with a cut glass momento from the Market Rasen Band in recognition of his service to the band, and the movement in general. An excellent evening, planned and managed to prefection by our secretary Brenda Cherry. A very proud evening for all involved.
Whit Friday 2009
Once again the band has decided to do the Whit Friday March competitions. This was the wettest Whit Friday experienced by the band in eight years. It started off well at Denshaw but by the time we arrived at Delph the heavens opened and it didn't stop raining all evening but for a short spell at Dobcross.
